Dan Gemeinhart: The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise (Macmillan Publishing Group 2019)

‘There is so much sadness in the world.’ Why can’t we get in the car and hit the highway to get away from it. Coyote and his father did just that after the girl’s two sisters and their mother died in a car accident. That was five years ago. Since then, an old school bus has been their home and they travel the country, going wherever they want. They just avoid their old home in Washington State…

Our story begins when Coyote takes in a kitten. She doesn’t know it yet, but that and one phone call will change her life. But not only hers: during their long journey, they meet several restless souls similar to them, with whom their fates will be connected, if only for a short time.

The novel speaks very beautifully about grief and acceptance of loss. Its most important message is that we must preserve memories, even the sad ones. Due to the repeated elements, the description of the story is almost lyrical. It’s a reading experience that makes you want to get in the car right away to discover new places and collect new memories.

Dan Gemeinhart was both an elementary school teacher and a librarian, but he is still a bookworm. He lives with his wife and three daughters in a small town in Washington State.
