L.D. Lapinski: Jamie (Orion 2023)
Jamie had a big secret. A secret that has affected their entire life. Until they told their secret: They are neither a boy nor a girl. They are non-binary. When they shared this secret with their friends and family, everyone in their closer environment accepted them and their life became much easier. Until it was time to choose the secondary school. There are only two schools in the town: one for boys and one for girls. Jamie is faced with a choice…
I have been very curious about this book since I saw it that was about to be released. I was interested to see what a non-binary character might be like. The story of the book is simple, however, the point of view is special: for Jamie, there is a problem that affects their entire life. What was also very good about the book, that it showed the behavior and reactions of the children and adults too. It showed that Jamie’s parents love their child, yet how difficult it is for them to cope with this unknown situation.
For the easier interpretation and dissemination of knowledge, we also find explanations of the concepts used in the book, like a dictionary. In my opinion, such stories can help us to know how diverse we all are and to be able to accept each other better.
