Emily Bronte: Wuthering Heights (first published in 1847)
Everyone knows Wuthering Heights, even those who haven’t read it. Heathcliff and Catherine are such remarkable figures of world literature who have inspired many other artists and have become immortal not only in books but also on the screen. The novel is set in the harsh countryside of the Yorkshire moors in Northern England, where after a few weeks of summer, cold winds dominate the landscape. The environment is not only background, but almost becomes a character in the story.
Emily Bronte was born in 1818 as the fifth child of a curate. Of the six siblings, only four survived to adulthood, but three made a lasting impression on the history of world literature. Poverty and poor health conditions took their toll on her health. She died at the age of thirty, but a year before that she had written one of the strangest and most significant books in world literature, Wuthering Heights.
I bought the book a long time ago to read it because it was a classic and I was curious about it. I finally read it this year. I won’t go into details about the story of the book, I expected that Cathy and Heathcliff’s love would not have a happy ending. However, the road that led to it was bumpy and heartbreaking. However, the characters cannot be pitied or condemned. As the author says, they chose their fate and were doomed to endure it. The treatment they received was as harsh as the landscape and they didn’t have many opportunities to be different. However, they didn’t seize the opportunities to become better, they lived for their desire for revenge and hurt each other. And yet, what was the point? Everyone has to find the answer to this question for themselves.
