Janus Secondhand Bookshop Debrecen

Janus Secondhand Bookshop Debrecen

I think everyone agrees that those who love books also love bookstores. Every place I go, I discover bookstores first. You may have already read about bookstores on BogiWrites that are special to me in some way: Bestsellers Bookshop and the London bookstores. Now I am finally writing about a store in Debrecen.

I have been living in Debrecen since 2006, since I started University. I would like to point out to the younger generation (if you are reading my blog) that back then we received our book recommendations from friends and librarians. And if we were looking for a book, we went to a bookstore and asked if it was available. A used bookstore has always been a safe place where you could find many treasures. Many books are currently unavailable elsewhere. Nowadays, everyone prefers to buy online and I am one of them, but even in this case, I choose used books if possible. Of course, the price is one of the reasons, furthermore, I feel like I am doing something for the environment.

Janus Used Bookshop was established in 2010 by the owner Tibor Kállai, to continue his work with this store, he has been involved in book sales and publishing since 1989. Janus, the two-faced, ancient god of beginnings and ends (also appears on the logo with the representation of light and shadow), Janus Pannonius, and the ancient heritage also played a role in the choice of name. The bookshop may be small, but they make the most of every square centimeter. You can find all genres of modern literature here, including my favorites: middle grade books, mysteries, and foreign language books. In addition to used books, you can always find new editions of Béla Hamvas works. If you’re in Debrecen, be sure to visit the small bookshop located in Gambrinus-köz. The building is currently under renovation, but the shop is open.

I’ll definitely stop by next time too, because I always find something interesting. I think that’s the best thing about second-hand bookshops: while in a store selling new books I always know what to expect, in a used bookshop I never know what treasures I’ll find.
