Jacqueline Harvey: Alice-Miranda series (Penguin Books Australia) We all know the protagonists who get into trouble with their every move throughout their history. Alice-Miranda is not like that. She is a phenomenal seven-year-old girl who enrolls herself in a boarding school called the Winchesterfield-Downsfordvale Academy for Proper Young Ladies to conquer everyone there with her kindness. Very cute book. For younger ones (and bigger ones also) it promises perfect relaxation. The 20th volume will be published this year. Australian author Jacqueline Harvey used to teach at a boarding school for many years but has had a passion for storytelling since she was a child. She is the author of several successful middle grade series: in addition to Alice-Miranda, she also wrote the popular Clementine Rose series. More than a million copies of these have been sold in Australia alone. Her books have appeared on many bestseller lists and received several…

Lana Del Rey: Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass (Simon & Schuster 2020) “And in that moment I decided to do nothing about everything” Lana Del Rey became known for her melancholic romantic songs, of which she is not only a performer, but also a songwriter and composer. She often edits and directs her video clips herself. Her songs summon the America of the 1950s – 1960s. This is also indicated by her stage name, which she took in honor of Hollywood actress Lana Turner, as well as the name of the Ford Del Rey car type, after her previous album released under the name Lizzy Grant (the artist’s original name was Elizabeth Grant) achieved only moderate success. Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is Lana Del Rey’s first book of poems, featuring over thirty poems, many of which have never been published elsewhere. In this special edition, we can…

Robin Stevens: Murder Most Unladylike (first published by Corgi Books 2014) I’ve heard a lot about Robin Stevens’ Murder Most Unladylike series from foreign booktubers. I have already read and liked two shorter volumes (from the Deepdean Mini-Mysteries series), but I haven’t started the novels yet. Now, when I saw that the first volume was published in Hungarian, I thought that now was the time. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a huge mistake, because I really liked it, so now I have to read all of them… Fortunately, the books will be published in Hungarian soon, because the covers of the next two novels can be seen on the back of the first book, and at the end of the story, we can read a short excerpt from the second volume. The main characters of the story are Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong, who attend Deepdean School for Girls.…

Liz Kessler: The Tail of Emily Windsnap (Orion 2020) Lisa Stringfellow: A Comb of Wishes (HarperCollins 2022) Anna Rainbow and Oli Hyatt: Antigua de Fortune of the High Seas (Chicken House 2021) Amy Raphael: The Ship of Cloud and Stars (Orion 2022) Maria Kuzniar: The Ship of Shadows – Secrets of the Stars (Penguin Books 2021) “Books in the stream” was the first Readathon that I not only participated in, but also organized. Sometimes, I plan what I will read in the given period, and on BogiWrites there have been several times that I have presented books of a similar genre or theme one after the other. This is also because if I like a topic, I want to read additional similar books. Nick Hornby said that our readings are connected to each other like links in a chain, there is always a point of connection between them. That’s why…

And except an odd old sailor, only she believes in magic. One night, however, the Ship of Shadows, known from legends, harbors in the port. Aleja joins the crew of all-women, where she finally feels at home: she can travel the seas as a pirate while searching for mysterious treasures. Anna Rainbow and Oli Hyatt: Antigua de Fortune of the High Seas (Chicken House 2021) Haven is a part of the Fortune Islands, which is true to its name, a perfect place for fishermen and traders. According to an old legend, the Pirate King once, hundreds of years ago, cursed the island and kidnapped the boys on the night of the Bloodmoon in order to create his all-victorious army from them. However, his plan was foiled by the sea creatures: they defeated the Pirate King, but the boys disappeared forever. The story is now just a fairy tale, no one knows if it had any truth in it, but peace was never restored between humans and sea creatures. This year, for the first time in fifty years, there will be a Bloodmoon and Tiggy must prepare for the celebration instead of watching the sea from the harbor. She always felt…

Lisa Stringfellow: A Comb of Wishes (HarperCollins 2022) What would you wish for if you could have anything? Since her mother’s death, Kela has felt as broken as the glass pebbles known as „mermaid tears” that are washed ashore on the Caribbean island of St. Rita. So, when Kela and her friend Lissy find an ancient-looking comb in a cave, against all her principles, she takes the treasure they found home. Meanwhile, far away, deep in the cold ocean, the mermaid Ophidia feels that her comb has been found and despite her hatred of humans, she must grant a wish. However, wishes are not given for free. The story takes place on an imaginary Caribbean island called St. Rita, inspired by Barbados, where the author’s father was born. You can almost feel the taste of the food and the sounds of the street from the descriptions. The author also depicts…

Liz Kessler: The Tail of Emily Windsnap (Orion 2003) Liz Kessler has written more than 20 books for children and young adults. In her middle grade books, we can read about mermaids, fairies, time travel and superpowers. The author grew up by the sea and still lives there. She loves the ocean; this is what inspires her the most when she is writing her books. She has also worked as a journalist and teacher, but she has always loved writing and always encourages others to do so. Her favorite hobby (after writing, because even though she works as a writer, she still considers writing as her hobby) is photography, but she also likes surfing, kayaking, fishing and swimming – basically anything that can be done in or near the sea. The Emily Windsnap series is mostly inspired by her love of the sea and the writer’s belief that special and…
