Asterix the Gaul

Asterix the Gaul

René Goscinny – Albert Uderzo: Astérix – La Fille de Vercingétorix (Asterix and the Chieftain’s Daughter, Albert René 2019)

B.C. 50, all of Gaul is under Roman rule, except for a tiny village…

Due to the courage of the villagers and not least the magic potion mixed by their druid, the Roman forces cannot defeat them. Here lives Asterix and his best friend Obelix. We can follow their adventures in the comics of René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. The first comic was published on October 29, 1959. First, Goscinny wrote and Uderzo drew the stories, then after Goscinny’s death, Uderzo was both the writer and the illustrator in one person. And since 2013, Jean-Yves Ferri has been writing and Didier Conrad is drawing the comics. The Chieftain’s Daughter is the most recently released work, it’s the 38th in a row. In addition to classic comics, albums, special releases, video games, cartoons, and movies were made from the adventures of the Gauls.

The comic strip was first published in Hungarian in 1975 in Novi Sad, in Yugoslavia. In Hungary, Móra Kiadó currently owns the publishing rights and so far, a total of 32 books are available in Hungarian.

Asterix and Obelix themselves travel to Rome, Paris, but also to more distant places: Britain, northern Europe, Egypt, and even America. The comics have been translated into more than 100 languages and dialects. One of the special features of the series is that most of its volumes are available in Latin and Ancient Greek and are designed specifically for language learners with a teacher’s guides.

In this volume, Asterix has to take care of the daughter of a dreaded tribal chief (the daughter is even more dreaded if possible). The girl, Adrenaline – her name also shows that she is not very calm – does not ask to be taken care of, but rather gangs with the local young people. The only trouble is that Caesar also finds out how important guest the Gallic village has. Adrenaline – who is the real protagonist of the story – is involved in many adventures followed by Asterix, Obelix, the Romans and a ship of pirates… I hope this story will be available in Hungarian soon.
